At the Helm: A Memoir gives a detailed account of the life and career of V. Krishnamurthy, a man with little formal education who started his career as a trainee engineer in the Madras Electricity Board in 1945 and became of the most important members of the Planning Commission of India. The author further writes about his experience working for Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited. He not only saved the company from imminent disintegration, but also managed to change Indira Gandhi s impression that Indian managers were not competent enough to manage large organizations. V. Krishnamurthy also mentions in the book the various challenges faced by him in managing a business enterprise in India and one of his greatest achievements to be awarded the prestigious Business India Businessman of Year Award in 1987.
