I Am the Messenger Markus Zusak is only twenty-seven and he has already written several highly acclaimed young adult novels, including Fighting Ruben Wolfe, an ALA Best Book for Young Adults. Markus has left Scholastic and is now with Knopf exclusively and we're lucky he is. His writing is sharp, vibrant, edgy, and chock-full of guy appeal (think Nick Hornby for young adults). I have read the prologue to his next book, The Book Thief (he's still writing) and it sounds mind-blowing. Narrated by Death, it is the story of Liesel who lives in Munich during World War II and who steals books and reads them aloud to Jews being marched to death camps and to people huddled in bomb shelters to comfort them.
