For Dr. Samantha Montano, disasters have always been personal. The year she was born, her mother joined her neighbors in protesting chemically tainted drinking water that was filtering into their homes. With politically engaged parents, Dr. Montano grew up understanding that people needed to do their part to stop climate change and fight for safe conditions.   Still, when she volunteered in New Orleans as part of the Hurricane Katrina recovery effort, she was shocked that there was still so much work left undone, even more than a decade later.
