A Criminal and An Irishman A CRIMINAL & AN IRISHMAN was published in hardcover simultaneosly with three Whitey/Southie books. This was unfortunate because Pat's story is very different. He was indeed a rival of Bulger's in the late 60s and early 70s and then an associate for years after, and so does have a few stories to tell about Whitey that the other authors can't, but the core of C&I is the story of Pat's work for many years as a secret Boston-based IRA operative. He smuggled tons of weapons and money from the U.S. to Ireland through numerous operations that have never before been revealed. His story of immigrating to the U.S. as a boy, joining a street gang, serving in Vietnam, becoming a hardened, high-ranking career criminal, and then turning his years of criminal-know-how and contacts to the service of the IRA is historically important, fascinating, and compelling.
